How do you organize your sounds?
How do you organize your sounds?
Hello, I'm a recent NS2 owner. I upgraded from the NS ex which I was in love with. The NS2's new possibilities seemed like a huge plus for me, but sometimes I am missing the simplicity of the NS ex. In particular, I'm having trouble deciding how to organize my list of samples, synth patches and programs. It seems that sometimes too much possibilities can be a negative. In particular, the weakest point in doing this organization is that Programs and Synth Patches do not seem to follow any changes in the samples's location.
I thought that the best place to start was by removing all the samples I didn't like, add all the sweet ones that I love and THEN... group together samples by category - basses together, mellotrons together, brass together etc...(I thought this would facilitate navigating when in "rompler mode", i.e. need quick access to a sample sound while in a program? Just turn the wave dial to select a different sample). But once I did all that, all of the Programs and Synth Patches that were "keepers" for me lost track of where the samples were (if they used one). Well in fact, what's worse is that I can't tell anymore which programs were keepers and which were to be removed in the first place because all of them were disconnected from their samples.
I know that most here will say that the beauty of the NS2 is to build your own Programs from scratch. While I agree, there are still many factory ones that I found inspiring and wanted to keep for future use.
Anyhow, seeing that this is probably the wrong way to go about organizing my sounds, I'd like to hear from those who have been using a NS2 for a while as to how do you keep your sounds organized. Where did you start in the process and how do you deal with samples' location.
Thank you!

Newbie: Using the Stage 2 live
Hello!
I have no doubt that the sounds and library access are fantastic on the Stage 2 however I can't find much info on line as to how to best use the keyboard lIve.
I have to make a lot of fast patch changes many times within the same song (the problem of prog rock!)..so how do you organise sounds on the Nord to be able to do that?
Can you store patch chains for example?
Can someone give me a quick overview please?
Thanks
Guy

Hello
You could decide to have one page per song. That would allow you to change between 5 programms during a song by pressing only one button.

Sounds good...but not knowing the architecture of the machine yet (I am thinking of buying one now) ...can you tell me in a bit more detail about "pages" and patch storage/organisation/retrieval... sorry to be a pain!

Re: Newbie: Using the Stage 2 live
You have 4 banks of 20 pages of 5 programs.
And a software (Nord Sound Manager) to organise (move / copy / rename / save / backup ...) everything as you want, the quick and easy way.
And all the buttons to quickly select a program while playing.

There's also some discussion about live patch changing strategies at
http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-stage ... t1569.html -
it's pretty flexible, if you put some thought into what you want it to do. And if you want to go beyond what can easily be done with front panel buttons, there have also been discussions about using the iPad, or foot controllers, or other MIDI devices to give it additional patch change functionality.

Re: Newbie: Using the Stage 2 live
That's lovely matee, but I do not have an i-pad...
I have a lot of very rapid patch changes to do within the same song..so I will most probably organise a Bank of pages in the library in alphabetical order (to include Set>SongNum->SeqNum>Patchame) and duplicate patches...not elegant, but this is so I can move in a straight 'one' press linear fashion through each piece

Re: Newbie: Using the Stage 2 live
Hello again...on the NORD SOUND MANAGER Screen earlier it shows an example of moving a program from BANK 4 to BANK 6...how do these BANK NUMBERS relate to the BANK A,B,C,D layout on the keyboard itself?
