Sustain Pedal Question ?

Post by Venatt »

Does anybody know if a Yamaha FC3 Sustain Pedal which works on the Motifs, will work with the Nord Stage 3

It won't work, because it is a continuous sustain pedal that Nord does not manage (only on/off or Triple Pedal).

It should work fine on the Nord, but like other common sustain pedals on the Nord, it will only work as an on/off sustain pedal, not for continuous/half pedaling.

ETA: Or not. Corrected below.

I tried mine when I got the Stage 3. It definitely does not work. There is also no switch to change the pedals behaviour.

The menu options for Sustain Pedal type (open or closed) should allow the Yamaha to work (as a simple on/off sustain pedal). You tried that?

I have never tried it, what know is that the FC3 is just a potentiometer, no switch (which instead Roland DP10 has), so while the level 0 (switch closed) can be read by the Nord Sustain input, its maximum resistance (not sure if it is 10K or 50K) may be not enough to be recognized as "open".

In any case such a sustain pedal type is not officially supported by Nord.

If you don't need to handle Half Pedaling and Pedal Noise, then any good quality on/off Sustain pedal is fine (Yamaha FC4a for example, since you mentioned the FC3, but there are many alternatives, it is a mattter of cost and personal taste imho)

Otherwise, if you want full control of all features (including Soft and Sostenuto pedals), you need the Nord Triple Pedal.

That depends on the way the stage is used i think.
A home/studio setup can be different from a live setup.

I use Yamaha FC5 pedals. As sustain pedal and as rotary start/stop pedal.
And FC7 for volume/control.

I just need a Sustain Pedal for Live setup just for regular piano action, I can do the rotary with the bender wheel. I guess I can use the Yamaha FC4 or FC5.
