If there is still a long wait time for P5 deliveries in your location perhaps you can sell yours for as much - or more - than you paid for it. The new owner may be thrilled to get it, even with the action sounds you described. Then you could either take a chance on another new P5 or perhaps you could find a different brand/model stage piano at a music store where you can listen to the action before you buy the same unit you played. My second choice for a new 73 key stage piano was the Korg Grandstage. It, like the P5, is available with either 88 and 73 key models and the actions of the two models are the same design.
Thanks for the comment. The Youtube video quality isn’t great, but I can hear the clicking still upon playback on my iPhone and iMac. It’s just the A key, not every key.

I could sell it and try my luck again, first I will exhaust my options with the retailer and see where I end up.

So the P5 is on the way back to the other side of the planet and they will be sending me out a replacement.

Would it be unreasonable to ask them to open and check the next unit to make sure it is free of issues?

I would think a small shop might accommodate this, but a big online retailer might not. I dont know?

Edit: Apologies, as I was reading this on my phone and didn’t realize it was an old post (and that you had already made your decision, lol). That’s what I get for watching TV and posting at the same time.

Hi! I just recently purchased my first Nord. I went with the Stage 3 Compact. It has the waterfall keys which I’ve found to be a good compromise that covers both the synth and piano end of things. Now, I do have an 88 key weight keyboard that I’m using as a controller, but the S3C really is good enough to play all of the above. I have an OB-6 as well, and I can tell you that the Stage 3 Compact is much easier to play piano with.

The S3C is able to layer two synth, two piano, and two organ sections. Also, it has an effects layer for each panel (so two complete engines). Oh, and as an aside, if you haven’t ever played a decent B3, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. You can actually set it up tin a way that to thickens your synth layer with some extra bottom end or a little sparkle on top. Oh, and getting the organ means you get the rotary speaker (Leslie) effect that you can assign to any section, not just the organ. Running a Wurlitzer through the Leslie is just beautiful.

So my original Nord 5 went back to Thomann because of the clicky keys. They were really good about the return but sent the replacement back in the cheapest possible way. That meant the keyboard sat in customs for a month and was delivered by regular post. My heart sank when I saw the box, it was split open at the top and a number of holes throughout, totally trashed and much worse condition that the first box that I had received. I had little hope that the keyboard would be without issue but lo and behold, it held up without a scratch on it and every key is perfect!

I'm really enjoying it so far, looking forward to digging into the factory sounds today.

A question about connecting the Nord P5 to my audio interface. Can I use a cable like the one below that is unbalanced 1/4" TS to TRS?

I'm just hoping to use a single cable that takes the Left and Right Mono signal and sends it into the interface with a single stereo connection.

Hi, it should be possible in one of this two ways:
1. the TRS into the NP5‘s headphone out and the TS plugs into your interface‘s left and right channel inputs
2. if your interface has a stereo socket input at one channel than you can use the cable the other way round, the TS plugs into the nord‘s outputs and the TRS plugged into the interface.
Cheers

Thank you. For some reason I was thinking that my interface had stereo inputs but alas it doesn’t. Not to worry!

My next quest is to find some great headphones. Are there any preferred models used by Nord players?

Hi Sentionaut,

I'm using 2 different headphones:

1) in the rehearsal room I use an Audio-Technica ATH-M50 X: https://www.thomann.de/gb/audio_technic ... 9&reload=1

2) in my studio I am using an AKG K-812: https://www.thomann.de/gb/akg_k_812.htm ... 9&reload=1

Both headphones sound really good, the AKG has an even better and more nuanced sound than the ATH-M50 X but at a much higher price.

Thanks for the reply! I have some old AKG K240s and they are solid. I had been listening to P5 via the headphone monitor on my Focusrite Clarett and it sounded not great. I plugged the headphones directly into the keyboard and it sounds wonderful. So I will keep using what I have for the time being, no sure why my headphone output on the interface sounded so bad, perhaps a problem for another day.
