Routing: 2 mono outputs with all layers?

Post by KenNord4 »

Is it possible to have all layers coming out on two separate bus/outputs?

For example, having all layers on Main bus coming out aux 1 in mono, and at the same time having all layers come out of bus/output 2 in mono.

I don't think one can as it seems like layers can only be assigned to one bus at a time.

Anyone want to give me a reality check?

TIA

Guess not.
But you can do that with a mixer. I can imagine several ways to do that. A small one is sufficent. I have that for my live rig. One line stereo, one is mono in my case. But could be both mono as well.
It´s good to have a mixer anyway, especially when you are with more than one keyboard.

+1 and don't forget the headphones output which can be used also as a (stereo) copy of OUT 1+2

Thanks for the confirmation. Yeah, I am really trying to keep the amount of equipment I carry to be minimal. At some point, I know that I need to expand things for a DAW/second keyboard.. which would be the point that I get a mixer.

Which small mixer have you had best experience with?

I have a Yamaha MG10XU for years. No drama, just works.
Cheaper models are most likely sufficent as well (It has audio over USB as well and a FX section - which is not really needed, but nice to have), but look out for one with balanced outputs (XLR). Might save headache with humming and noise on stage. It as well saves you from needing a DI-box on stage. Soundtechs are usually pleased to see that. The mixer should have an FX AUX channel, the "send" can be used to split a monosignal for monitoring - unless you actually use an FX device, then this route is blocked. I do not, it is my personal monitor out. The tech can do what he likes, I hear myself, no matter what.
There are several cheaper models out there with quite similar layout, either chinese copies, or they just follow the logic of "what is needed is there". I have an old (15 something years?) "Phonic" mixer as well, was pretty cheap back then, and is still working today. But it has no balanced outs and I had problems with humming on stage. Behringer is said to do decent mixers in that range as well, but I have no personal experiences with those. I finally wanted something bulletproof on stage.
The Yamaha minimixers have older incarnations as well, I heard they are very (very!) sturdy, you might get one used for a good price.

For mono-out, you just use one channel left or right. Turn the pancontrol on each channel accordingly to one side.
Or - input all instruments as mono, and have 2 parallel mono-outs in addition to the FX send. Makes 3 monos as output.
Depends on the mixer. Dedicated stereo-inputs might be not 100% agreeable with that, since they always might be left and right. In that case you will just have left OR right comig out on either output.
On the Yamaha, the stereoinputs can work as monos as well, with just the left channel connected. Might not work with any type of minimixer. The Yamaha is pretty well thought out and complete in that regard.
