Accidental button presses

I just got a NP5 6 days ago. Love the action and sounds, but I'm having a major issue. When playing piano, mostly stride and octaves in flat keys, my fingers often hit one of the on/off buttons causing a disastrous change in the sound. This has happened at least a dozen times in the short amount of time I've played it so far. The buttons are too close to the keys. My hands aren't even that big.

I had a Kurzweil pc2x for 25 years - never happened once. I had a Roland RD-2000 for 6 years - never happened.

If they would just move the controls up an inch or so (where they weirdly print the labels for the back panel connections!?) it might be ok. I kind of like everything else about it.

I was so happy when I bought it a week ago. It's like finally marrying your dream girl and finding out she's been cheating on your honeymoon.
So bummed.

I feel JUST FINE about my playing technique and I'm not entertaining notions of changing it for this.
Was thinking of swapping it out for the grand and it's slanted interface, but after poking around in this forum sounds like they have the same problem.
Also considering having some plexi key covers fabricated - but OMG!
Also building my programs with any unused effects or engines set to zero. If one of those gets hit - nothing happens. If I hit off to engine I'm using it just goes silent. Still pretty bad.

I'm afraid this one is gonna have to go back to Guitar Center with all the hassle that entails. Then I'm back to square one for what KB to move forward with.

Hi, and welcome to the Nord forum.
I have heard about people using the Nord Grand having issuses with accidentally knob turns, but never on other models.
Believe the NG has a panel lock button to prevent this, but as far as i know this is the only Nord model (NG v.1) with this function.
The idea with the button-placing is the ability to make changes quickly in live situations.
If the buttons are placed to far from the keys, then the whole idea of smooth operations disappears.

I always wonder when I read this: on a real piano you would hit the wood at the end of the keyboard if you would play in the same way, so an "educated piano player" should never do that, both on a real piano and on a digital one; if this is rigth, then considering that Nord HA keyboard keys are piano-size this should never happen,if it does it indicates something wrong in the positioning of the player vs the keyboard imho or... should we add a vertical "barrier" at the end of the keys also to any digital stage piano?

You´re right! But well - most of us are no "real" keyboard-players, but wildly gesticulating humans that can hit the right key by chance.
When I see a video of myself playing an extatic Key-Solo, I think more of "JoeCocker movings" than a "ChickCorea playin"...

Take a look at this Yamaha YC61 - I just had one in my lttle repair center, where the user /player had chopped of these little Layer on/off switches, because he left the keybed-zone while he swipes for a Organ-whoosh.

And I recently played a NS2 as a guest musician and hit an other Programm-Button by chance while just playing. As I still had 8 bars to play and did not know where my former used sound was stored, it was an uncomfort situation...

IMO we REALLY need some (smart but sufficient) distance between keybed and controlers (what surely should not end with a panel depth like an Aircraft carrier like these Yamaha Motifs...)

This is a bad take. If we were playing a "real piano", we wouldn't have to move our hands up to turn knobs, so this wouldn't be an issue. This has happened to me a million times as well. The buttons are in terrible locations.

You are just confirming what I mean, when you play the keys on a real piano you just play them keys, you don't accidentally hit the piano chassis (do you?): why can't you do the same on a digital piano (I mean while you just play the current sound, not while adjusting settings on the fly)?

Having said that, OK a "Panel Lock" function would be nice to have, on any keyboard (just in case) or in general having more free space on the lower part panel (but then the keyboard would be a bit bigger/heavier overall)

Just yesterday evening during a performance while celebrating an ecstatic Organ-Solo
I accidentally hit the program button for the string patch while playing.
That was very "unpleasant".
I actually pay attention to my "playing field"
but the distance here is really a bit tight...

Just glue some razor blades at the end of the keys. You'll probably do it one or maybe two times again...


Nevertheless... I you want to make a change fill out the feedback form at Clavia's website. That should have more chance to get it solved I guess
