Added Second Manual, Lost Swell Pedal

Post by alexanderlyon »

Hello everyone,

With help from some forum members, I've just added an upper manual to my Electro by sticking an M-Audio midi controller on top and swapping my lower and upper manual settings between the two. (You can see the details and even a photo here.)

Everything went smoothly, except for one thing: My swell pedal (a Yamaha FC7) no longer works--though the sustain pedal I have been using as a Leslie switch *does* still function!

Any idea why that might have happened, and how I might be able to fix it? It's wonderful having a second manual, and the M-Audio even feels somewhat like the Electro. But if I can't get the swell pedal working again, I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board...

Did you by mistake maybe plugged the swell pedal into the wrong jack? It should be independent on the second keybed …

No, I'm certainly capable of doing that, but it was the first thing I checked!

The swell pedal and rotor/sustain pedal are plugged into the same places they were originally on the Nord. The rotor pedal still works, but the swell pedal no longer does. I'll try unplugging/plugging it in again and rebooting everything to see what happens...

This is very strange. I went to the control pedal screen under system settings, and as I played with the FC7, I could see the percentage changing on the screen--but there was no difference in the sound.

Aha!

The problem seems to be that in order to get the settings I wanted on the upper and lower manuals using the "External Keybd to Lo" function, I had to enter "Live" mode--but that disables the swell pedal. When I exit Live mode and return to my old split program on the Electro, the swell pedal works again--but I am stuck using a single set of settings (drawbars, percussion, chorus) on both manuals.

Is there any way to get the swell pedal working in Live mode with a second manual attached?

Fixed it! I was able to do what I wanted without engaging Live mode--and now I have no idea how or why I wound up in it to begin with.

It's strange though that Live mode disables the swell pedal. Is there a reason for that?
