Nord red carrying case target for theft?

Post by Joedg »

I bought my first Nord instrument and my wife wants to buy me a Nord red case for it.
I’m concerned it will advertise it and make it a more likely target of theft.
Thoughts? Thinking about just a plain black case.
And, while on the subject, how does one secure it in a club/venue?
Thx.

I don't think clubs/venues are at high risk of theft: you will almost always be near your instrument, there are always lots of people around, very likely there will be security cameras, and anyway a keyboard is not a very convenient thing to steal: big, heavy, with lots of stuff connected (cables, pedals, laptops etc). It's not something a thief can casually pick up, put in his pocket and nonchalantly walk away.

I am far more worried about what happens before/after the gig: cars, vans and load-in/load-outs. Any bag, case or piece of equipment left in plain view is a target for thieves and, in contrast to the stage, everything is already conveniently packed and ready to be taken away quickly and without being too conspicuous.
I try to always keep an eye on my stuff (I never leave anything in the car for extended periods, and of course I always lock the car and if possible, I don't park it in dark isolated places).
As for the brand and color of bags and cases, I don't think the average thief is an expert in musical instruments and evaluates if it is a Nord, Yamaha or Korg before breaking your car window ;). I think the factors mentioned above are far more influential in the thieve's decision to steal something or not.

Thank you you make excellent points and put my mind at ease.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve played out in clubs and all and back then I was a bass player so I had a bass and amp/cabinet and that was pretty much it.
But you’re right - I keep my eye my stuff and the most risky time is loading and unloading.
TMI;
Takes me back to more than a few 2 AM load ups in San Francisco near the Tenderloin, watching Police and hookers hanging out and talking to each other.
Always made me think of that Warner brother cartoon with the sheepdog and the wolf who punch cards in during the day and fulfilled the role of sheep watcher and Wolf, and then checked out again that night and we’re friends when they were not on duty.
I always wondered what the hookers and the cops were talking about. I guess shop talk

anyway this was a great help.
And my wife will be happy to hear it cause she wanted to get that for me for my birthday. Take care.
