NS3 : how to use shared sample ?

Post by Groswilly »

Hello,
I recently got an NS3.
I can completely use the programs shared here by users: perfect!
However, I don't understand how to use nsmp files. When I load an nsmp file via Manager, it offers to convert it, and then I get a sound that appears in my sample library. But this sample only contains a single sound, which doesn't sound at all like the mp3s that contain this sample. And since all users generally congratulate the poster on the quality of his work, I deduce that I don't know how to do it!

For example, on this one:
viewtopic.php?t=4901

He says he split the keyboard with different sounds. I only have one sound, no split...

How can I enjoy these shared samples?

Thank you very much!

You need to use that sample in your Synth section, the split is already in the sample so nothing special needed: just create a new Program, do a Synth Init on it an load that Sample in Synth Section (from NS3 or double clicking on it in NSM).

Note: read also carefully that post, the poster says At C2 is the intro (synth + strings). From D2 to A#3 you have Rhodes. From B3 to E6 you have strings and from F6 to F7 You have a lead synth. so mind which keys you play

If you load a program, everything is set. You can use it, and you can tweak it. That way, learning to use your machine is easier.

If you load a sample (from the piano or the synth library), this is only material to create something out of it on your own. A lot of possibilities, a lot of freedom - but unfortunately, you need to learn how to 'cook' sounds. The sample is only an ingredient for the soup. Good luck and enjoy playing around!

The NS3 was my very first synth, and the last few years are something like an adventure travel into piano, organ and synth sounds.

Hello,
Indeed, I missed starting with an empty program and sound init.
I have the splits in the correct locations.

So now, how can I modify the split points?
And can I modify the sound of a split zone (change a piano to an organ, for example)?

Thank you very much for the valuable advice!

For that sample you cannot modify the splits, they are embedded in the .nsmp sampleset when it was built by the OP of that thread you linked.

For all the rest i.e. using split and zones and assigning sections to it, you should maybe study the manual first (please) viewtopic.php?p=181405

Just to make sure you don't misunderstand that sample:

1. Your Nord Stage 3 has 6 internal layers (2 organ, 2 piano, 2 synth) plus the extern section. This way it should be relatively common that you can spread sounds on a split keyboard just by attributing one layer per zone. But not all Nords have that.
2. Creating custom splitted samples is just a workaround if you run out of sounds for a song. But there are downsides: You can't change the range or the relation between the different volumes after having created and loaded that sample.
3. In my eyes, it is not very common that you need that sort of trick on a Nord Stage. It's may be more common on a Nord Electro, though.
4. A big advantage of sharing samples instead of programs on this forum is that different models can use the same sample, but never the same program - programs are always model specific in the Nord universe (except for the new feature for the Nord Stage 4 which can apparently get converted Stage 3 programs).

I'm always puzzled by such pedagogy and clear explanations from @FZiegler. Glad we have such great experienced users here on the forum !
