Nord C2D outputs

Post by krslae »

In the near future I will purchase a C2D for my #2 home studio. Although I use a pair Yamaha HS80M hooked up to my Korg Kronos in another room, this one will basically be a headphone setup with no such stereo monitors: a PC hooked up to a Schiit Bifrost DAC, then into an Asgard headphone amp and then to my Sennheiser HD650 headphones.

So my question is: Are there only analog outputs on the C2D? It would be nice if I could transfer digital audio from the USB output on the organ and into the PC (and eventually to the headphones), and that way have what I would call a complete setup. If there are only analog out on the C2D, I would have to go thru some combobulation to ‘blend’ the organ and the PC sounds. Thanks guys :)

You only have analog (unbalanced) outputs, unfortunately. There's also a rotary speaker output and a monitor input on an 3.5 mm jack, but that only sends the incoming audio to the headphone output, not the regular outputs.

On my Nord Stage 2 I checked if it would be possible to tap off the digital inputs to the DAC (something I've done with my Sony SACD player to get a digital output), but that wasn't easily possible (I forgot why, possibly because it had a I²S instead of SPDIF input or something). The C2D likely has the same (or a very similar) DAC.

Btw. I forgot what kind of DAC it was (probably a Cirrus Logic). Probably a 24-bit 96 KHz one; it doesn't mean it would actually be running at 96 KHz of course (the Access Virus TI has a 96 KHz DAC, but it runs it as 44.1 or 48 KHz).

There are better solutions than buying à nord c2d just for recording in à computer and homestudio. If the signal is that important maybe à vsti is better? Have you tried b4 and vb3?

Mojo (vb3) is à better solution. Nord c2d is more for live and home playing. Just My opinion :-)

I have à nord c2d and the outputs is not à problem for recording if you have à good Soundcard.

I record both my c2d and vsti organs in cubase. Both methods are sounding Great!!

Today I tried out the pipe organ mode on the C2D I ran it first from the 1/4 in high output in to my motion sound Pro 145 rotary amp with the amps rotors stopped. The volume on the swell keyboard is drowned out by the great keyboard? I then tried running from the left output of the C2D no change, then the right output no change. Finally plugged two cables into both the left and right outputs and ran then both into my Pro 145 amp. Still no great difference. How do I raise the volume of the swell keyboard? Should I be using two amplified speakers one for each output instead of into my mono Motion Sound Pro-145? The pipe organ sound is beautiful but I need to hear the lead over the chords on the bottom manual.

"How do I raise the volume of the swell keyboard?"

"Swell level" on the "Sound" menu. However, without coupled stops, the swell will always be softer than the great. And remember the "swell" pedal only affect the swell manual. At full open, it's almost as loud as the great.

Many reviewers have praised the Nord instruction manual. I found mine to be very useful, and I still refer to it sometimes.

I wish to use the left and right outputs from the C2D into a pair of JBL LSR305 studio monitors which have a balanced 1/4 in and a balanced XLR input on them. How do I do this. I spent a half hour at guitar center and they didn't have what I needed ?

You need something like this: http://radialeng.com/j4.php or a mixer.

All my active speakers with balanced inputs will take an unbalanced one just as well, but if you're concerned enough, you can always use a small mixer and connect via that. I have one of the little Yamaha's and it works fine for this job, plus it'll give you a bit more output into the speakers if you need that. I wouldn't bother at home, but it's not a lot extra to carry if I'm taking the organ, a pair of speakers and a sub to a gig anyway.

Otherwise, as pointed out, a box liek the radial or just a DI will do the trick. But if you have 1/4" inputs on your speakers, just check the manual and I'm fairly sure you'll be able to plug a TS into the TRS socket OK.
