I don't get it...is this a band playing a cover of a hit song or is it a karaoke routine on top of some sampled traxx? the drumming is nice, the bass playing is nice, the vid shoot and editing are nice, everything is nice, but...

I don't recall whose signature tagline this is, but somewhere in one of these forums I've encountered someone whose signoff line says "pressing Play does not constitute making music" or words to that general effect. To each their own, but that pretty well says it for me. In Florida I am surrounded by musicians, a great many of them really fine and accomplished musicians, who spend most of their days doing little more than pressing "Play" on a machine and playing along with the machine. They make nice money doing it, pay their bills and raise their kids and those are all worthwhile things, but I'm just an old stick in the mud and prefer my music "Ital," that is, natural. No sequencers, no canned traxx, no mysterious sounds coming from the speakers that make it sound as though there's five or more people on stage when there's only one or two.

But that's just me...

bless,

pablo

Thing is, that it takes a lot of effort to have 5 people on a stage to play music. Not musically, no, the human factor is the worst... I think there are a lot of (good?) musicians out there who don't find 4 other people who think the same about what they want to accomplish. Been there done that, spent the last year looking for a band, got disappointed a few times, got tired of that, went back to playing some solo stuff on piano, or piano/vocal singer-songwriter stuff. But I can't sing, so asked around for a singer. Turns out that even finding a singer who wants to sing in his native language is next to impossible, all the cool cats out there want to sing in English.

So there you are, you are a 2 man band, a drummer and a bass player. What are you going to play?

As it happens, I play quite often in a duo with a drummer/lead singer and also occasionally in a trio with a drummer/lead singer and a guitarist. I play bass/kbds and sing backing with an occasional lead. No computers/traxx needed. I'm only with that trio every other Sunday afternoon, but we've held that gig for five years now with no complaints. And the other two guys from the trio work full-time as a duo the rest of the week. They've worked a steady 4-5 times per week (and often more in season) that way, a drummer/singer and a guitarist, for about 7-8 years, making good money, paying their bills and raising their kids off of nothing but music.

I have no doubts that these people in the vid are good people and they obviously have serious musical skills. I wouldn't have bothered to go out of my way to volunteer my thoughts on this, but they posted the vid and asked for response, so I'm responding with my personal opinion. They obviously don't need to play on top of canned traxx to sound good. I'd be much happier to see them play as a duo, or add a third if need be, without leaning on samples stolen/borrowed from the latest pop craze hit. For me this works better as an audition tape for someone else looking for a drum/bass team, and I won't be surprised to learn that they do hook up with someone who happens to be looking for bass/drum help as a result of this vid.

Your points about finding musicians (generally a crazy lot already, and it seems that the level of crazy usually increases with the level of talent) is well taken and I personally am blessed to have found people with whom I have been able to work for a very long time -- but just keep plugging away at what YOU do and seek satisfaction on your own terms and you may discover that the right person/people will come to you.

Lastly, I'd encourage you to try singing even if you think you can't. There are plenty of folks who've done well singing even though they have terrible voices when defined in the classical sense (Joe Cocker, Tom Waits, Rod Stewart, whatshisface from the Stones, oh yeah, Mick Jagger). It's often more about the heart, and if you put your heart into it the vibes will follow.

Bless,

Pablo

As far as I can see, they're just playing over the top of the original track, with their own drums and bass turned up to mask the originals. Not much of a work ethic, and certainly not worth recording and posting publicly. Just pointless showing off, all image and no substance. Misplaced egos, methinks. As for "Crazy!" - yawn.

I was trying to be nice, but yeah, that pretty much hits the nail on the head. Especially the "not worth recording and posting" part, unless as an audition tape.
