Lady Gaga synth tone

Post by alancondie »

Hi there
New to the forum and just took possession of my Nord Stage 2 76 - love it. I am currently trying to program all of my sounds for my bands songs, and wondered if anyone has managed to program a sound for "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga. I am getting all of the sounds for Organ and Piano but the synth is a bit new to me. It was previously all done for me on my Yamaha Motif XS.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Cheers
Alan

Hello Alan,
Welcome to the forum!
Congratulations on being one of the lucky few to have the NS2, Many are still waiting on delivery.

There's a bunch of different synth sounds in this song.
Which one(s) are you looking for?

Hi Hanon
Many thanks for replying to my request. The main right hand synth sound is the one I would like to program in (the EEEE-G#G#G#G#-D#D#D#A-AAG#G#) It sounds predominantly like a sawtooth wave but it also seems to have a sine wave in there too. Any help you can give me would be so much appreciated.
Many thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,
While I can't send you a synth patch "my NSEx isn't compatible with your NS2".
I can give you some tips on how to create the sound.
Possibly one of our great NS2 owners could even do it and share the patch.

I took a square wave multi 5.0, 50% duty cycle, no filter modulation, filter resonance "emphasis for you Minimoog fans" all the way off, filter cutoff around 12KHz, amp envelop sharp attack, max sustain, medium release, no velocity modulation.
Overall patch should be monophonic like a lead synth. The portamento, or glide should be very low as to be imperceptible.

The mashed up element to the sonic character "for my version" was created by ring modulation in the effects section, but in the original, I feel it was the oscillators and filter being slightly modulated by a noise waveform.

My gut instinct says the original sound is a Moog Voyager.

This sound demo was done with my NSEx.
While this is FAR from spot on, it tends to get the point across.
I'm confident that another member could take this to the next level.
I hope this helps.
Cheers, Hanon

Thanks again, Hanon. It is much appreciated.
I notice on comparing manuals for the two keyboards that there are some differences in the controls in the synth section, so I am now trying to work out how some of my controls can be used to achieve the same result as yours. One thing you can guarantee is that I will persevere with it till i get the right result.
All the best
Alan

Hi Alan,
feel free to PM me, or post back with any additional questions.
While I don't yet own a NS2, I have seen and played with one.

Cheers, Hanon

I think your patch is "softer" than on the song itself. What i'm hearing on lady gaga is what you're offering - plus an lfo modulating the filter running on a very high speed (but not on audio rate yet), and not a very high amount. That's supposed to give you that little dirty addition. I think.
Another way it could be done - but not on the NS2 though - is if you modulate the osc with white noice. I tried it on my PolyEvolver and it's also a solution.

Hello zahush76,
that's an excellent observation, I quite agree.
I would encourage you to do a quick mp3 demo and upload it.
Cheers, Hanon

Thanks Hanon.

Since i sold my NS classic and am waiting for the NS2 - i can only try to make an mp3 demo of this sound using my PEK or my Moog Slim Phatty - but that's not the point. So it'll have to wait for some time. In the mean time - you can try it at home.

Hi all,

I thought this was a good chance to try making one of my first ever synth sounds. Here is what I have come up with so far for the intro to Just Dance. Check it out and let me know what you think. I know it isn't perfect, but I think it's pretty close!
