Re: The Doors presets

Post by Zerb Bot »

Hi Guys, I'm on a NE6D and I play in a Doors tribute band. I'm looking to mimic as many Doors sounds as possible. I'm pretty new to the Nord world but, if I understand correctly, .ns3f files are stage piano program files, so they won't help. To my knowledge, I can't convert the program files either. I was wondering if you can give any advice about which patch to start with (or patches to mix) and which effects to apply. I'm planning to post something on the general forum too, but I noticed this thread and was hoping you guys might have some input too. There are several songs I am looking to mimic:

For example, in Hello, I Love You, I think Rey Manzarek used a Gibson G101 with some kind of percussion and sustain setting on it. I am excited to try the patch Supertrampfanboi shared above (thank you!), but I'd still need an effect to get that buzz sound. Any ideas?

Riders on the Storm is a Rhodes, obviously, but I think I hear tremolo and maybe a phaser in the original recording?

Not to Touch the Earth: no idea what organ he used, nor how they got the weird psychedelic floaty, bendy sound. My hypothesis is that it is a Gibson G101 and they used the bend switch on the proprietary volume pedal those organs had. How could I mimic it?

For Love Her Madly, Moonlight Drive, etc., Ray was playing a tack piano, which my NE6D has a near perfect sound for (labeled as a honkey tonk piano) for these Doors songs. It sounds just like it.

I also has a Yamaha MODX8 and Yamaha has always had great default Vox Continental organ sounds for the Doors' early recordings, it's one thing that has kept me a Yamaha customer. My S80 had a perfect Vox and so does the MODX. Interestingly, it sounds more dead on to the Doors recordings compared to the NE6D.

Hello. You can use the NS2/NS3 program viewer at nord-stage-forum-f3/ns3-program-viewer- ... lit=Viewer to view the settings of Stage 2 and Stage 3 programs. The information will help you recreate anything using the piano and/or organ on your NE6D and samples to the extent they aren't heavily modified with the Stage synth settings. Good luck!

I was surprised how easy it is to sample sounds into the Nord Sample Editor v4 and create Nord Sample files. Try it with a couple sounds you like on the S80 and MODX and see how they turn out loading into your Nord. Take care.

You can use the NS2/NS3 program viewer
Thanks for the suggesting. I haven’t heard of this program (or the sample editor) before. I’ll check them out.

WannitBBBad, do you know whether you can sample the Yamaha in Sample editor via usb or would I need to mic an amp? I did a quick tutorial search and didn’t find a matching scenario.

I have a simple setup where my keyboard stereo audio routes directly into my laptop and I record the audio with Audacity. I bypass any unnecessary source of extraneous noise that might affect the quality of the sample. The Nord Sample Editor v4 will let you record directly from a source audio input into the app, however I prefer the flexibility of starting with a WAV file using Audacity and then just dragging the file into the sample editor with it assigning the keys to the notes sampled. Given you can add effects with your NE6D, it would be better to record your Yamaha without effects if possible (turn off reverb, chorus...) to give you more control of the final sound. If you have the ability to use USB from your mixer as the audio input to your laptop, that should work well, but in all cases (USB or audio mic/line input) you need to watch your levels so the audio doesn't clip. Let me know if you have other questions - if a lot of this is new to you, just let me know what you need clarification on. Take care

Hi Zerb,

not sure if it will help but I had created a few samples for some Doors songs some time ago for another user of this forum, you can find them on the Nord User Sounds website. In total 7 samples with different splits and transposing, just scroll down the image below and klick on the individual samples do download them

Schorsch, I’d love to check out your samples. What did you sample them from (if you don’t mind me asking)?
