Same here, sold my two NS3s.

I have both NS3 and NS4.

I am glad I did NOT sell my NS3 because "gigwise" my NS4 is practically useless in my setup because all those MIDI issues.
Since May I've been waiting for them to be fixed. This is just another perspective to this comparison. Soundwise I am very happy about NS4 and frustration comes from the fact that I cannot have those nice new features which NS3 do not have. What comes to Midi and external control NS3 works perfect and is flexible. Unfortunately you can’t say that about NS4.

I have been programming both for a while now and am gradually thinking the 4 has better quality

Well this personal, but, in my opinion, I believe that you probably will enjoy NS4 someday if you keep it...
I my personal experience, I had the NS2 compact and bought the NS3C. I was so desapointed with the pianos sounds that I wrote a lot of stuff here in forum about how the Piano sound Weak, Thin, 2D, hollow, and without Harmonics on NS3.
Some guys made a very "scientific" analysis with both and by that people decide they sound the same.
Well, I repected that but, not for me. Ok, I moved on, but even today everytime I play on a NS2 I think the pianos still sound so much better. So much realistic, full body, 3d image.
Even so I kept the NS3 because of synth section and bigger piano memory.
Today I can't go for NS4 because I have 340 sounds for all my gigs, so buying a NS4 Would be useless for me.
I Still miss the piano sounds on NS2 but it was wise to keep the NS3 and today I'm really glad with that. If you buy NS4 someday (maybe more than a year) you will get used to that and you'll never think about NS3 anymore... I guess...

I’d sum my view this way: I believe you’ll probably love your NS4 if you only use it standalone and not with other MIDI gear. On the other hand more you connect it and more complex your MIDI setup gets more likely you’ll disappointed. (And I am talking about its current state; I am not saying that this will be like this forever).

Based on my email exchange with Nord they were did not carefully think thru and test this new NS4 architechture and how it might be problematic in some setups.

Version 6 pianos sound great on the Stage 2 EX88 for sure.Kept mine and I'm happy with it.
Three XL grands, three XL uprights, three XL Rhodes and Clav and Wurli all sound fantastic on the Stage 2EX.
I really have no use for Nord synths, they are OK but I have WAY better sounds from thirty and twenty years ago,Roland XV3080 still Rompler of choice, since 2000.
Roland Integra in a different league than Nord for sure.

20 a month to have unlimited access to Roland's flagship is a good deal PERIOD!No more hardware EVER!

GpKey wrote:I'm mainly referring to the timbre. The SN3 sounds warmer than the NS4 in my opinion. Initializing both in the Synth section and loading my own sample or one from Nord, I hear a lot of difference in the low frequencies, where NS4 is poorer and false, and where instead it exaggerates in the high frequencies. By setting the filter envelope values the same on both, it decays much sooner in NS4. The resonance filter, 12/24 db, sounds different. The Delay, Chorus and Reverb effects are much less warm in all variants. The LFO between synths is out of sync. The only positive thing is the keyboard (Fatar). Compared to that of the NS3 -76 HP, that of the NS4 73 HP is much more playable and much less noisy. Then there is certainly a personal taste. I think I still have good ears. For example, when I bought the Minimoog Model D Reissue, I compared it with my friend's old Model D and the sound was identical, or rather, better than the new model, because the oscillators are more stable. Nord continues to fool us with the story of the incompatibility of the various versions. You always have to start over. I found other differences in the Synth. The Nord Wave I own, sounds warmer. I think that Nord used not very good converters and loaded the control panel too much, however taking away a lot of personality from the sound. Features like “Song” are gone and those added are bad. Do we want to talk about MIDI and the EX KEY?
They should have released it later, without all these defects, perhaps listening to the advice of some professionals, before putting it on the market. We are now the Beta Testers. The speakers I use are Adam Audio and AKG K240 MKII headphones. The instruments are connected to a Mackie 24-4-2 analog mixer (made in USA) and the instruments are Nord Stage 4, Nord Stage 3, Nord Wave, Minimoog model D, Prophet 10 Rev4, Yamaha TX 802, Roland D550, Akai S300 XL, M-Audio Keystation 61, Cakewalk A500,
Mooger Fooger MF104 M, TC Electronic SCF Gold, Universal Audio Starlight Delay and Universal Audio Golden Reverb. I have had various Nord keyboards over the years. Nord Electro, NS2, NS3 and now NS4. In short, I think I'm a little prepared, after about 50 years of music and various Synths passed through my hands. I am convinced that this time North was wrong.
Hi, I can confirm GpKey's findings. Comparing the same e piano samples side by side (effects off) the NS3 sounds warmer, has more body. NS4 sounds thinner and even harsh in the higher octaves. It goes with out saying that IMHO it is more fun to play e piano on NS3 rather than NS4. For me the issue is so significant that I am considering to sell my NS4 again. I hope the issue will go away with OS updates and as well as new created samples specifically for the NS4 (like Stockholm piano which is better). That said if this issue is related to the hardware, this is a real problem. It seems Nord could do a better job to transfer the existing components which work well on their new models.

Following the conversation in this thread, it seems that users who do not play the NS4 side by side with a NS3 or NS2 do not hear that problem. Anyway I am surprised that the issue is not more broadly discussed.

Has anyone done objective measurements (even including a null test?), to confirm that the different models (Stage 2, 3, 4) actually produce a different sound from the same piano sample and midi input?

I only have the Stage 3, and am not looking to buy another model, but I'd be super interested to find out more about this. Anyone who says they hear a difference, might be completely right or completely wrong. I don't know.

But if you want to help confirm / disprove this, input a midi note (or set of notes) and compare the output from different models. An accurate spectrum analyzer will probably already tell al lot, but if the results are super close, a nulling approach might even be appropriate.

The models of course have different features that might effect the results, but a dry piano sound with all extra effects shouldn't show massive differences, if the piano sample used is exactly the same.

Btw. I'm not interested in this just to show than I'm superior because I'm more scientific that others. No. And my hypothesis might be wrong anyway. If it is, I will admit it straight up. Some scenarios like "I'm thinking about selling X because it sounds thinner" can be avoided if the "sounding thinner" can be disproven. And that's what I'm interested in.

I also have both and do prefer some of the samples in the the 3 the saxes are better so had to sample them off the three and the brass 2 is better on stage 3 seems thicker warmer can’t get the 4 to sound like it although they are both named the same and p5 saga synth sample I think it’s called sounds more synth like but it’s early days and the eq on each sound and three synth engines mean I can go to one keyboard live now helps a lot and the keybed strangely I prefer on the 3 the velocity seems harder to play for some reason but will keep going I’m getting used to it and sounds are getting there live so all good and another plus is being able to change layers on a foot switch now so no hands needed think that’s my two pennys worth hope it helps someone

The NS4 filter frequentie goes higher (32kHz) than the NS3 (21 kHz) So when you load the same sample on NS4 and NS3, the NS 4 can sound brighter.
You should compensate for that with the filter if you are comparing the two models.
