synth used in "Maneater" and "I Can Dream About You"?

Oh OK. Well I guess most people go straight for their FM8/FM7 VST these days as a first-port-of-call for FM Synthesis.Mr_-G- wrote:The FM oscillator is a nice touch, but it is quite simple when compared to the DX7 architecture.

Here is a quick DX21 self-creation I made last night (albeit at 3am!). It is the SAME patch used in 3 x different zones, hence used 3 x different ways:neolithic wrote:love old synths! Just keep me away from eBay!DX
Not sure what the NAVIGATION is like on the NS2 for EDITING FM? It is quite cumbersome on the DX's to say the least!

Re: synth used in "Maneater" and "I Can Dream About You"?
It is difficult to properly understand the algorithms. For example the feedback (FB) is it from the [carrier] to the [modulator] (like in the DX7 algorithms 4 & 6), or within [modulator] itself (like op6 in algorithm 1) or the [carrier] itself (algorithm 32)?
The DX7 had all those kinds. Also there is only one EG that can be applied to the shape parameter, so it is not clear in the 3 Op algorithms, i.e. [carrier]<-[modulator]<-[modulator] what is that controlling.
Is there any documentation apart of what the manual says?

Well the NS CLASSIC manual is dreadfully thin!Mr_-G- wrote:It is difficult to properly understand the algorithms. I would guess that the EG is either controlling ALL three OP's, or, ONLY the CARRIER.

I think the Amp EG controls the carrier. Then the Modulation EG (and LFO too) could be controlling just the last modulator in the chain, or both modulators. I am not sure about this and that is unclear in the manual.

Exactly, the MANUAL is hopeless! Probably best to tweak and just use your EARS as a guide (this method seems to work best in many situations. lol!).Mr_-G- wrote:I am not sure about this and that is unclear in the manual.

Re: synth used in "Maneater" and "I Can Dream About You"?
i need to spend some time messing with the FM. I haven't done a lot with it so far - I found it a bit uninspiring tbh.
Meanwhile this thread has gone way off course - it was originally a request for (and response with) a patch that was based on subtractive synthesis - not FM we may get more input if we start a new FM topic, but right now I haven't got a lot to offer, so I'll post when I have!

Well if you can come up with any ideas/discoveries for the FM engine then please share (esp for Stage Classic!).neolithic wrote:we may get more input if we start a new FM topic, but right now I haven't got a lot to offer, so I'll post when I have!

I don't have access to a classic i'm afraid. But I did spend some time today really messing with the FM synth and it pretty much all fell into place . I understand what they did, why they did it, and actually it's quite cool! I'll create a new topic with a kind of 'FM synth' guide when I get around to it.monsterjazzlicks wrote:Well if you can come up with any ideas/discoveries for the FM engine then please share (esp for Stage Classic!).neolithic wrote:we may get more input if we start a new FM topic, but right now I haven't got a lot to offer, so I'll post when I have!
