I just sold my Piano 5 and got a Stage 4. There was three user samples on the piano 5 that I downloaded to my computer before selling it. Now I have three Nsmp4 files. I can upload them and play them on the stage 4 no problem.

However I would really like to create a new envelope with longer release and more velocity - so they can load default with these new settings baked in.

I cannot load the sample format Nsmp4 to the Nord sample editor to change the envelope and save it to a new sample. It does not accept that format without a program file ?

Is there a way to alter the envelope settings on these files either on the Stage 4 or in software so they load default with these settings ? I can make them into a program with the settings but I would prefer to have them as samples.

No, you cannot edit existing Nord Sample Library samples, even if they are user-created they cannot be modified once "compiled" as .nsmp
You would need the original .wav(s) samples and related NSE project file to do that.

But on NS4 you can save them as single layer Synth Presets to have them ready with the envelopes etc... you like
