Yamaha DX-7 "Piano 2" Preset/Les Miserables "Chain Gang?"

I can't seem to find a sample or program for the DX-7's Piano 2 preset, that grungy crunchy piano. It's also the basis (with some added wah and flange) for Les Miserables's famous "chain gang" sound that propels the musical's orchestra.

Does anyone have a sample or program for the Piano 2 or Les Miserables sound?

Hi - which sound? Both digigrand2 and ballad2 are on nord sample site: https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sounds/pi ... ategory=41

It's neither of those. I believe it's called "Piano 2" in the presets.

You can hear it at 4:19 in this video:

Then the "Chain Gang" sound is that Piano 2 with a bit of wah on it.

I think you could easily recreate that by taking a wurli, rolling off the high eq, adding a phaser. Maybe layering with one of the ballad EP sounds, or a CP70 digi grand.

I would use Dexed, load the Piano 2 preset and then sample some of the keys.
Create a Nord nsmp file from the WAV files and load it.

To me it sounds like a combination of Wurli and Clavi, enriched by some overdrive. Glad if this may help a bit …

Cheers

It does help some. I'm still sort of surprised that at least the main 32, if not the full 128 DX-7 sounds aren't just a standard pack everyone has in their back pocket. It feels obvious from the outside, but is probably a ton of work from the inside.
