Nord Stage 2EX possessed by a demon

Post by kevbasskeys »

Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone can help me figure out what might be causing this problem? In the middle of a rehearsal my Nord stage 2EX suddenly just started freaking out, where the drawbars starting moving by themselves & LED’s started flashing like there was a short or something (see video clips). The display also started scrolling through random words, does anyone have any idea what might be causing this/how to fix this? Basically most buttons don’t work and the controls are changing on their own (see videos). The weirdest thing is when I got home of course it worked fine but I’m too scared to gig with it anymore in case it happens again.

A bit of history about this board - it was stolen a few times and each time I got it back it seemed like it was dropped or thrown around so I have no idea what actually happened to it. Until now though it still worked properly, and in the rehearsal it was working just fine until 90 min in when it happened out of nowhere. I thought it was the power at the venue but the next day I brought in a friend’s stage 2 and I had no problems.

How stable was the electric supply where the kbd was misbehaving? Maybe you can borrow a voltage regulator and test if that cures it.

The drawbar issue might be explained by stuck keys. Check if the keys move freely. A spilled liquid might leave a sticky residue that binds the keys, or the keys might be misaligned in the opening in the chassis.

The behaviours seen in all three videos might also be explained by loose cabling between the main board and the display/control panel board(s).

Good luck - let us know if you find anything.

Unfortunately it was just a 2 day run at the venue & I no longer have access to that stage

Not sure if it’s stuck keys as I would have had that problem from the get go, however the loose cabling makes sense, I’ll check that out, thanks!
